Porous Borders: Minister Identifies 1,487 Illegal Routes Into Nigeria

Porous Borders: Minister Identifies 1,487 Illegal Routes Into Nigeria

About 1,487 illegal routes into Nigeria and 84 regular borders have been discovered by the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro has said.
Moro who was responding to  a  question on  the  porous nature of the nation’s borders against the backdrop of  the current security challenges facing the country  as well as the current  insurgencies across the nation’s borders said, “since I assumed office we have taken deliberate steps in conjunction with National Boundaries Commission, to identify our borders and the routes that leads to Nigeria from other countries.
“I have repeatedly told Nigerians that in that process we have been able to identify 84 regular borders and over 1,497 irregular routes to Nigeria”.
The Minister however said the current administration under the leadership of President Good luck Jonathan has not thrown its hands into the wind in the face of the porosity of the nation’s borders, rather he said the Nigeria Immigration Service under the purview of the Ministry of Interior has taken far reaching steps towards patrolling and controlling movement around the identified regular border routes.
Moro further revealed that plans were underway to use the Public Private Partnership model to further demarcate Nigeria border posts with her neighbouring countries so as to ensure a better border management of the nation.

“We are contemplating using the Public Private Partnership model, to see how we can construct graders, around our borders, because as it is today  if you go to most of our land borders you hardly can define when you are in Nigeria and when you are out of Nigeria, and that is because of lack of physical structure that will separate Nigeria from the other country, so this is what we plan to do and I hope that within this financial year with the arrangement we have put in place construction work will start immediately in some of these borders.
“.. of course, we are contemplating, given the resources that will be giving to us, that we should also complement the physical human effort patrolling our borders. We believe it will ensure a better border management for Nigeria.”
On the issue of influx of aliens into the country, the Minister emphasized that that the problem was not peculiar to Nigeria alone, adding that the Nigeria Immigration Service has not relented in its constitutional role of ensuring that undesirable aliens are eased out of the country.

Senate President David Mark is also implicated in the sordid affair.

Nigeria’s secret police, the Department of State Service or State Security Services (SSS) has been hit by a recruitment scandal involving the violation of the principle of federal character.

Senate President David Mark is also implicated in the sordid affair.

Impeccable sources close to the SSS told News Express that during the last recruitment exercise embarked upon by the Service “David Mark alone sent in over 40 names of his kinsmen in clear and flagrant violation of the Federal Character principle.”
The sources alleged that “there were supposed to have been 155 cadets but federal character violators like the senate president increased the number to well above 300.”
The cadets are undergoing training at Ojo Barracks in Lagos, South-West Nigeria. The training, which began their around July last year, is scheduled to last for a year.
The manner in which the cadets were selected reflects the new but illegal practice of top Nigerian government officials sharing vacancies among themselves while more qualified candidates who have no godfathers roam the streets in search of non-existent jobs.
“Why is Mallam Abba Moro, the Minister of Interior, not screaming Federal Character violation?” asked a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “He sacked erstwhile Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mrs. Rose Uzoma, over a similar offence while he has remained mute over the scandal at the SSS, a department which his ministry also supervises,” the source observed.
Contacted by News Express, Marylin Ogar, Assistant Director, Public Relations, at the SSS, said: “I cannot respond to security issues over the phone. You have to come to our office and fill a form. You have to sit in front of me and ask your questions so that I’ll be sure I am talking to a journalist.”
Informed that News Express had earlier sent her a mail and requested her response through the same channel, Ogar cut the line after saying: “I cannot do that! Good day and God bless you.”
Contacted by News Express, Kola Ologbondiyan, Special Adviser on Media to Mark, replied: “Kindly scan the list and forward to me so that I confirm the letterhead and signature. Tanx

EPL Preview: Chelsea V. Manchester City [5:00pm

The biggest English Premier League game of the weekend is undoubtedly the Chelsea vs Manchester City matchup at Stamford Bridge in London today, November 25th. Chelsea will be hoping their home advantage & new coach earn them all the three points at stake.

Both teams are coming off a disappointing week in the Champions League. Man City was held to a 1-1 home draw against Real Madrid which ultimately condemned them to the less prestigious EuropaCup while Chelsea were handed a lesson in goal scoring in Turin where they fell 3-0 to Italian champions, Juventus.

City hasn’t lost a game in the league yet and go into this game in second place with 28 points from eight wins and four draws. Chelsea also come into this match sitting in fourth place just behind West Brom. They have seven wins, three draws and two losses in league play. A win against City here would put them right back in the middle of the title race after having only managed to earn two points in their last four league matches.

In their last 10 meetings, Chelsea has won six games against City while the Manchester club has won the other four. They last met in the Community Shield in august and City won 3-2 after Chelsea had a man sent off. City has scored 25 league goals this season with Chelsea right behind them at 24. City’s defence is the best in the league after conceding just 10 goals against Chelsea’s 13.

City manager Roberto Mancini has a lot of power upfront with four world class strikers to choose from – Carlos Tevez, Sergio Agüero, Mario Balotelli, and Edin Dzeko. He also has attack-minded players in David Silva and Samir Nasri not forgetting the ever dependable Yaya Toure. Fernando Torres could return to the starting XI under new Chelsea manager Rafael Benítez, after coming on as a substitute against Juventus.

Chelsea will have to play without skipper John Terry as he’s injured and it looks like English international midfielder Frank Lampard will also miss the game. For City, they will also be without their captain as Vincent Kompany will likely miss the contest after being injured against Madrid. Defenders Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott are also questionable.

Chelsea (Possible, 4-2-3-1): Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Cole; Ramires, Mikel; Mata, Hazard, Moses; Torres.

Manchester City (Possible, 4-4-2): Hart; Maicon, Kompany, Nastasic, Clichy; Silva, Y Touré, Barry, Nasri; Agüero, Tévez.
